Sylvan park & Hillwood Neighborhood
Sylvan Park is known for a distinct neighborhood vibe and streets named for states. The neighborhood is centered around McCabe Park and the roundabout on Murphy road.
Initially claimed by founder of Nashville James Robertson as his homestead, the neighborhood was established as a self-sufficient satellite town of Nashville. The area gradually evolved from fertile farmland into a residential area as a result of its proximity to Vanderbilt and downtown.
The highlight of Sylvan Park is its walkability, with fantastic access to sidewalks and bike lanes throughout. The Richland Creek greenway is a gem within the neighborhood. With five miles of trails stretching from White Bridge to Murphy Road along Richland Creek, the greenway offers a variety of walking, biking, and running trails in a beautiful setting.
McCabe Golf Course is encompassed by the greenway, offering 27 holes of golf that cater to beginners and scratch players alike. The course attracts tons of traffic as one of Nashville’s busiest and is claimed by former FedEx Cup and Tour Championship winner Brandt Snedeker as one of the courses on which he learned to play golf. Adjacent to the golf course is the McCabe Community Center, which offers full-service workout facilities, ZUMBA, yoga and other classes, as well as after-school programs for local kids.
Access to schools is another wonderful aspect of the area, with West End Middle, Overbrook School, St. Cecelia, and Montgomery Bell Academy all within great proximity on both sides of Harding Road.
Along Murphy Road, there are a number of great restaurants with easy accessibility. Edley’s Barbeque has some of the best-rated brisket, pulled pork and ribs in town in an awesome setting. They have a huge selection of craft brews and a full bar serving signature custom cocktails that can be enjoyed on their patio. Across the street there’s Park Café, an upscale spot that uses seasonal ingredients to tailor their menu to any mood or time of year. The Local Taco has become a neighborhood staple known for their creative twists on classic tex-mex and fresh margaritas. For breakfast, stop by Star Bagel, Nashville’s oldest bagel shop that’s the perfect place to grab breakfast and a coffee to start off the day.
