The Neighborhood: Wedgewood-Houston
The neighborhood has roots in the post-revolutionary founding of Nashville, as much of the land was originally purchased by John Rains, who helped found Nashville alongside James Robertson. The oldest standing structure in the area is the Merritt Mansion, which was built by a daughter of Merritt and is rumored to now be owned by local rock group Kings of Leon. The area also has tremendous Civil War history, as it is home to Fort Negley, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The area is loaded with diverse food options. Gabby’s Bugers is a go-to lunch only spot that’s become an institution due to its juicy burgers, shakes, and famous sweet potato fries. Gabby’s continually ranks as a top five burger joint in the Tennessean and the Nashville Scene’s annual rankings. Bastion is the Nashville Scene's winner of the 2017 best restaurant award. The restaurant described as ‘impossibly cool’ has become a go-to due to its exclusivity, open-kitchen, and renowned chef.
The neighborhood is loaded with community parks and greenspaces. Reservoir Park has excellent walking trails around the 8th avenue reservoir. Rose Park is a community recreational area that is supported by generous donations from Belmont University. The area has fantastic geography, as it is bordered Lipscomb University, Belmont University, and Vanderbilt University. The neighborhood is also home to the Fairgrounds, which will house the city's upcoming MLS franchise that will begin play in 2019.
